This is an example of the first limited edition cels, signed by Chuck Jones. Chuck Jones was a renowned animator, director, and producer of animated films; he was particularly known for his work on the Looney Toons and Merrie Melodies cartoons with WARNER BROTHERS STUDIOS. He animated and directed a slew of cartoons staring Warner Brothers most famous characters, including BUGS BUNNY, ELMER FUDD, DAFFY DUCK, PORKY PIG, MARVIN THE MARTIAN, and many, many more. In 1962, Chuck Jones left Warner Brothers to start his own studio, and also produced films for MGM studios, most notably Dr.Seuss HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. Although Jones had left Warner Brothers in the 1960s, he periodically worked with the studio throughout the rest of his career. In the 1970s, Jones, his daughter Linda, and a few business partners developed the idea of LIMITED EDITION CELS. Limited editions cels captured favorite scenes and character from films, and allowed the studio to market to a wider consumer audience. A fire at the Warner Brothers Studio destroyed many of the cels and drawings from the 1940s and 1950s; limited editions allowed the studio to recreate those favorite moments. The first limited edition, titled DUCK DODGERS GROUP, featured characters from the popular 1953 feature, Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century. Each cel had a hand-painted background, and was signed, dated, and numbered by Chuck Jones.
The concept was so popular, that Jones and Warner Brothers started producing other limited edition cels; the idea was also picked up by other animation studios, such as DISNEY. Chuck Jones passed away in 2002; the limited edition cels allow animation fans to continue to enjoy his profound talent. DUCK DODGERS GROUP is numbered AP 243/500, and measures 19 x 17 framed.
